Virage 2009 Launch
Pilbeam’s 2009 specification MP98 Virage is nearing completion. The Hillclimb version includes a 75 kilogram weight reduction.
Developed for the European VdeV series, the MP98 is suitable for other sportscar series around the world. The Virage hinted its true pace last year with a fastest lap and 3rd place finish at Croft last year, in the hands of Charlie Hollings and Chris Randell. Extensive research using ChassisSim laptime simulation software was used both in the design and refinement stages.
Throughout the winter Pilbeam Racing has been working on a number of modifications and improvements for the MP98. These are provided as standard on all future cars.
Front NACA ducts – Now integral with the bodywork, allowing cleaner airflow over the front of the car and finer, quicker adjustment.
Splitter Mounting – Improved to provide a stiffer front splitter, now more resistant to bumps and kerbs. The stiffness also gives better downforce at high speed.
Wing Mount – Upgraded to a carbon wing mount from aluminium, greatly improving stiffness and strength while also reducing weight. This modification has allowed a refinement in the aerodynamic balance.
Steering Rack Ratio – Increased to reduce required steering wheel movement.
Cooling – Efficiency improved to allow for more adjustment. Radiator size increased and underbody airflow improved.
Uprights– Refined and improved
Pilbeam has also designed a Hill Climb version at a weight saving of 75 Kilograms. This uses the same chassis, engine and suspension but has been tuned for the Hill Climb environment. Costs for the optimised driveshafts, brakes and bodywork are offset by items including a smaller fuel tank, radiators and no airjacks. The lighter Hill Climb chassis is actually cheaper than the VdeV version.
