Radical New Designs
Pilbeam Racing Designs have developed a new 2009 LMP2 specification wing. This was first seen on the Radical SR9 in round 1, Catalunya. Radical achieved a strong 4th with ex-Pilbeam Le Mans driver Pierre Bruneau. The rear has also been optimised to increase downforce.
Pilbeam Racing always remains on top of the new regulations, even though sadly there will be no entry in the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours.
The new regulations for LMP2 aimed at reducing the rear downforce and cornering speeds. Both the span and the cord length of were reduced, reducing area to approximately 2/3rds.
With an extensive CFD analysis Pilbeam aimed at clawing back the shortfall. The initial results were encouraging and with continued development an estimated drop in downforce of only around 5% was predicted. Car testing and the results at the track have confirmed this.
Pilbeam Racing Designs are continuing development of the wing and are hoping to see Pierre Bruneau’s MP93 on track later this year. With the upcoming sale of the MP93-02, Pilbeam look to have a busy year in the LMP2 field.
